As a young teacher at SGS , he was always one of my favorite students... years later , popping back into my classroom during Back- to -School night.... to announce, "I'm back!" when his own son started kindergarten. Doug was my friend. Every summer after mowing our lawns we would polish off a 6-pack and talk about everything. Doug looked out for me and was always ready with just the right tool. He insisted on shoveling my snow even if it meant he was out there shoveling at 5 am just to beat me to it. Doug was a stubborn guy. Doug was too sick last summer to hang out and drink beer. I already missed him. One day I caught him outside and he was feeling pretty good. He was done with chemo, at least he thought so. We hung out on the front step and talked for about an hour. I mentioned I had a problem with my garage door lock. Doug went into his garage, came out with his WD40 and fixed my lock. Just like old times.
