I have such fond memories of Mr. Brookins or dare I say Sylvester? Although he never heard me refer to him as anything other than, "Mr. Brookins", it was common knowledge that Anthony and all of our childhood friends fondly referred to him as "Sylvester." There are countless memories I have of Mr. Brookins. However, there is one that stands out above all others.
My brother Craig and I had a fruit and vegetable stand we set-up on Inman Avenue in the 70's. I was 12 and Craig was 10. One year we decided to sell peaches. I gave one to Sylvester to taste. With the peach juice still running from his lips he said, "Where did you get these from, boy?" "Down South." I replied. "Down South? Georgia? Ain't nothin'like a Georgia Peach." he said. I replied, "Down South Jersey?
"Boy that ain't south of Nuttin."
I was very pleased he still bought some. He was a great man and he will be missed. Hope to see him in the peach orchards of heaven.
Fondly,
Jeff Morson
