Sylvester Brookins, affectionately called "Bum Baby," was born on September 26, 1915 in Randolph County, Cuthbert, Georgia, one of ten children of the late Rogers Brookins and Carrie Dixon Brookins. He was educated in the Randolph County Public School system in Cuthbert, Georgia.

Sylvester served his country in the United States Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945 and was honorably discharged. After serving his country, he moved to Jacksonville, Florida, then to Charlotte, North Carolina and finally Newark, New Jersey.

He moved to Linden where he met and married Thelma McGhee on March 28, 1953 at Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church. This union was blessed with a daughter, Bernadette.

Sylvester was a faithful member of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church for sixty-six years; where he served on the Senior Usher Board for many of those years.

He was a faithful employee of the General Instrument Corporation in Newark, New Jersey for many years, retiring in 1981.

In 1972, Mr. and Mrs. Brookins built a home in Edison, New Jersey for their family. Sylvester was a devoted husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed hunting, poker and barbecuing with his family. Everyone who knew him knew he was a sharp dresser from head to toe.

He was predeceased by one daughter, Mary; two sons, Tommy and Jesse; four sisters: Mozelle, Rebecca, Luella and Silva; and five brothers: James, Lewis, Arthur, Issac and Lonnie.

Having completed a life well lived. Jehovah called him home on Friday, December 14, 2012.
