Stuart A. Osber
Stuart A. Osber

Stuart A. Osber, 90, passed away May 29, 2017 at his home in Glastonbury. Stuart was born on October 11, 1926 in Hartford, CT, son of the late S. Berton Osber and Betty (Miller) Osber. He was the beloved husband of 57 years to the late Jean Ann (Shapiro) Osber.

He was a 1944 graduate of Hall High, West Hartford and Syracuse University (1949). He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the Philippines.

After the war, Stuart worked at the family business, Osber's Department Store on Park & Broad Streets, Hartford. Then in 1952, with his wife Jean Ann, they established Stuart's of Glastonbury, "Outfitters to the Youngset." For the next 37 years, they worked side by side in their store selling children's clothing and shoes, joined by their daughter Betsy in the business in 1983. Stuart and Jean Ann poured their heart and soul into their store, getting to know countless area families, developing friendships, and drawing much satisfaction in watching generations of children grow up in outfits from Stuart's.

As soon as Stuart retired in 1989, he immediately became a devoted volunteer, a passion that he found to be extremely rewarding. He dedicated over 25 years to the American Red Cross blood drives, earning many awards of recognition. Throughout the years, he also volunteered with the WFSB Channel 3 Hot Line, FISH of Glastonbury, Meals on Wheels, and Manchester Memorial Hospital. Stuart was an active member of the Hartford chapter of the Jewish War Veterans.

Stuart was predeceased by his wife, Jean Ann in 2008. He leaves his loving children, daughter Betsy (Osber) Mantis and her husband Martin Mantis of Glastonbury, his son Matthew Osber and his wife Joan Fenster of Framingham, MA. He also leaves his beloved grandchildren Carrie and Jarred Mantis and Jennifer and Stephanie Osber; his dear brother Herbert Osber and his wife, Milli of West Hartford and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank The Hearth of Glastonbury for their wonderful care and support of Stuart.

Funeral services for Stuart Osber will be held at Congregation Kol Haverim, 1079 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury, CT on Friday, June 2, 2017 at 1:00 pm with Rabbi Stephen Wylen officiating. Interment will immediately follow at Adath Israel Cemetery, 714 Pine Street, Middletown, CT where full military honors will be accorded.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests Memorial Contributions in Stuart Osber's name to Congregation Kol Haverim, 1079 Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury, CT 06033 or to the American Red Cross, 209 Farmington Avenue, Farmington, CT 06032.
