Astrid Celest (Benson) Bengtson, 83, of Middletown, wife of the late Allen F. Bengtson, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at Middlesex Hospital. Born in Middletown, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Cecile (Menard) Benson.

Astrid graduated Woodrow Wilson High School where she was Captain of the cheerleading squad and went on to graduate from UCONN. She taught math at Woodrow Wilson Junior High School for twenty-five years and coached their cheerleading squad. Astrid was a very active member of Christ Lutheran Church, now Faith Lutheran Church, where she was a Sunday school superintendent and managed the finances of the church.

Astrid was an accomplished pianist and considered her piano to be her most valued possession. She had affection for cats, enjoyed watching British mysteries on PBS, was an avid reader and enjoyed sewing, knitting and quilting.

Astrid enjoyed summer vacations along the Connecticut shore and Cape Cod. She and Allen had a summer home in Pripet on the Island of Islesboro in Penobscot Bay, Maine where they entertained family and friends for many years. They could be found most Friday evenings having dinner at the Cypress Grill. Astrid and Allen were also patrons and philanthropic supporters of local theatre.

Astrid is survived by two brothers, Stuart M. Benson and his wife, Barbara of Southbury and Atty. Charles H. Benson and his wife, Pamela of Niantic; a sister, Alma B. Waldo and her husband, Russell of Guilford; brother-in-law, Attorney David Bengtson and his wife, Diane of Middletown and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, May 30 at 11:00 am in Pine Grove Cemetery, 857 South Main Street, Middletown.
