Elder Robert S. Saunders, age 80, son of the late Beulah and Jesse Clemens, departed this life May 31, 2016, in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania.

Elder Saunders was ordained as a deacon in 1978 at Mother COGIC, and in 1979 he became an ordained minister under the late Bishop L. T. Blackshear. He last served as an Elder at Mother COGIC and previously served as a minister at Alpha Baptist Church and Faith Tabernacle UHC.

Elder Saunders served two (2) terms in the United States Army; one during the Korean Conflict from 1953-1956 and later in Vietnam from 1960-1968.

From 1957-1960 he was a Police Officer serving with the elite Undercover Department of the Wilmington Police Department's Alcohol & Drug Unit.

He is survived by his loving wife, Juanita Pearl Saunders; children, Rodney Saunders (Erica), Barbara Hinson, Melanie Joy Saunders, Lisa Saunders, Ysa Love-Saunders, Jantyne Love-Saunders; and he was the loving step-father, Robert Hunter, Cecil Hunter, Tonya Davis, and Felicia Pendergrass (Ted). He is also survived by one sister, Vivian Ward; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; a multitude of nieces and nephews, including his devoted niece and nephew, Pamela Harris and Adrian Spence; and other relatives and friends.

Elder Saunders was a well known figure in the Wilmington community and will be sorely missed.

His Home Going Celebration will be 10am, Friday, June 10th at Immanuel Church, 2414 Pennsylvania Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806 with viewing from 8-9:45am only. Burial will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear, Delaware.
