Joseph Miller was born in Stanton, Texas to Nicholas Miller and Edith Johnson in 1922. His early years were spent with his father in Stanton; as a teen he moved to Amarillo to attend high school, and then attended St Mary’s College in San Antonio, Texas. In 1942, he joined the Army in the Signal Core Reserve. After the war, he took advantage of the GI Bill to go to UC Berkeley and study Electrical Engineering, earning his BS in 1948 and his MS in 1949. He spent the majority of his work life with Hughes Aircraft, designing radar systems for various aircraft. In 1957 he married Doris Lugliani, and in 1958 his daughter Susan was born. He moved the family to San Pedro in 1962, and remained there for the rest of his life. Doris passed away in 2007.

Joe will be remembered for many things: his knowledge and ability to solve problems, his dry Texas wit, his creative abilities with wood, and his knack for making up words to amuse his friends and family. He was always ready to lend a hand. He enjoyed being outdoors, and participated in archery, shooting, swimming, camping, and hiking.

He is survived by his half-brother Jesse Kendrick, his daughter Susan and son-in-law Glen Olson, and his granddaughter, Vanja Lugliani.
