Herbert H. Wood, Jr, 96, died Jan. 30, 2019, of natural causes at Inova Fairfax Hospital, in Fairfax, VA. A resident of the Washington DC area for over 45 years, he was born July 5,1922, in Port Angeles, Washington, to Herbert H. Wood Sr and Alice Coleman Wood. He grew up in Port Angeles, WA., where he attended Roosevelt High School. He attended American University, where he met his wife of 62 years, Priscilla Biron Wood.

He served in the Armed Forces during World War II, and was involved in the D-Day invasion of Normandy. He has received degrees in Political Science (B.A.), International Relations (M.A.), and Public Law and Government (PhD). He was Assistant Professor at Columbia University, and intern at the United Nations, Associate Professor at the University of Maine 1950-60, Dean of Albion College 1961-64, President of Kansas City Regional Council on Higher Education 1964-72, Executive Director of GT-70, a nationwide community college consortium 1972-75, Associate of University Associates (higher educ.consulting), 1975-87.

After retirement, he served as a volunteer Referral Specialist in Education for AARP. He served on the Resident Council for Greenspring Village, a retirement community in Springfield, VA, where he also helped his wife with leading the pottery class. He was a longtime member of Messiah Methodist Church in Springfield, VA. His greatest satisfaction in life always came from helping and encouraging others, with an optimism that was ontagious to all those around him. He loved people, and could always remember someone's name. Most of all, he loved to tell jokes.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Priscilla, and his brother James Wood. He is survived by his Committed Companion, Sally Woomert, also of Greenspring Village, and by his children,. James W. Wood (Diane), Gordon C. Wood (Sophia Zou), Janet W. Hoke (Dan McClellan), and Judy D. Wood, 9 grandchildren , and 8 great grandchildren.

Services will be held Saturday, Feb 9, 2019 at 4:00 pm, in the Greenspring Village Chapel, followed by a reception in Garden Ridge at Greenspring, The family would like to sincerely thank all of his caregivers and the staff of Garden Ridge in Assisted Living and Rehabilitation for their care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Greenspring Benevolent Care Fund, 7410 Spring Village Drive, Springfield, VA 22150.
