ALEXANDRIA, IN - Richard J. “Dick” Daugherty, 89, passed away Sunday, February 11, 2018 following a brief illness.

Richard was born on July 19, 1928 to Roy and Mabel (Barnett) Daugherty in Frankton, Indiana. He graduated from Alexandria-Monroe High School in 1946 and served in the Indiana National Guard for seven years following graduation.

Richard Daugherty made a profound impact on the Alexandria community through a lifetime committed to service. He served as an Alexandria police officer for 20 years (1954-74) and as a school bus driver for the Alexandria-Monroe Township for 25 years (1961-1986). To many in town, he is best known for serving fine food and ice cream as the owner of the iconic Dor-Tee’s Drive-In, which he and his wife opened and operated for 34 years (1958-1991).

More importantly, Richard served as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He served as a kind, compassionate friend to many who knew him, and as a committed follower of Jesus Christ through membership at the Alexandria Church of the Nazarene. He enjoyed wintering in Florida for 31 years, spending time with family and friends, and supporting his favorite sports teams.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of 67 years, Anita Mae (Gaither) Daugherty; children Stan (Brenda) Daugherty and Jill (Brian) Benjamin; grandchildren Amber (Chad) Hudson, Travis (Jessica) Daugherty, Trevor (Breanna) Daugherty, Summer McCarthy, and Jordan Benjamin; and eight great-grandchildren.

Preceding Richard in death are his parents and eight siblings.

A funeral service honoring his life and legacy will be held at the Alexandria Church of the Nazarene, 1401 S. Harrison Street, on Friday, February 16, 2018 at 1 pm. Pastor Mark Diemer will officiate. Interment will immediately follow in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria. Visitation will be held Thursday from 4 pm to 8 pm and on Friday from 12 noon to 1 pm at the church.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alexandria Church of the Nazarene Family Life Center through the funeral home.
