Derek Wernher, 79, longtime resident of Metamora, died peacefully at home Friday June 16, 2017. He was born June 1, 1938 in New York City, NY to parents Philip Wernher and Margaret Noe. He married Lynne Nolte on June 29, 1963 in Milwaukee, WI. Mr. Wernher received his Bachelor's Degree from California College of Arts and Crafts and his Master's Degree in Fine Arts from Cranbrook Academy of Fine Arts. Derek was a talented and well known sculptor who worked in bronze. He exhibited throughout the country and received numerous awards for his work. Some of his local commissions can be found in Flint, Lapeer at Taylor, Carter and Butterfield, Ann Arbor, at the University of Michigan Children's Hospital, and Troy at the Northfield Hilton Hotel. Nationally he has installations in California, Montana, Texas, Indiana, South Carolina, and Florida to name a few. Derek was involved in numerous local charities and was a longtime member of the Lapeer Rotary Club. He also enjoyed flying his airplane, golfing, building canoes, fixing engines and listening to music. Mr. Wernher truly loved time spent with family and friends.

Mr. Wernher is survived by his children: Alex (Rosa) Wernher of Twin Peaks, CA and Ashley (Scott Collins) Wernher-Collins of Cape Elizabeth, ME; grandchildren: Hannah Wernher, Sarah Wernher, Max Wernher, Rachel Wernher, Chloe Wernher, Ryan Collins and Trevor Collins; by his sister: Gretchen (Richard) Nielsen of Greenville, DE; and by his companion and friend of the last 10 years Carole Morris. He was preceded in death by his wife: Lynne in 1993 and his parents.

A memorial gathering will be held at The White Horse in Metamora, Sat. July 22nd at 6:00 pm. Honoring his wishes, cremation has taken place.
