Ernestine Holmes "Tina", age 76, of Somerset, New Jersey, wife of the late Eugene Holmes, peacefully departed this life on June 10, 2017.
Tina was born on January 11, 1941 to the late Emmett and Emma Coleman in Roselle, New Jersey.
She later moved to Newark, New Jersey after marrying the love of her life, Eugene Holmes. Together, they resided there and raised their children for 39 years.
For the past 9 years, she resided in Somerset, New Jersey in order to be closer to her children.
Tina was devoted to her family and truly loved and enjoyed the time spent with them. She is survived by one son, Cecil Earl Holmes (Andrea Rogers) and one daughter, Jean Monique Holmes Severino (and her husband, Pete Severino); 12 Grandchildren: Tina Holmes-Aponte, Jamaal Holmes, ShaDan Holmes, Christopher Holmes, Jordan Severino, Jada Severino, Jasmine Severino, Jiselle Severino, Darrell Bey, Valacey Bey, Ashley Bey, and Janice Bey; 6 great grandchildren: Kam'Ren and Karmelo Aponte, Omari Holmes, Zaire Holmes, and Kayden Holmes, and Gabriel Holmes; one brother, Alfred Coleman; one sister, Constance Parker (and her husband, Kenneth Parker), and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Tina was educated in the Roselle, NJ school systems and attended Locust Street School from Kindergarten to 8th Grade. In 1959, she graduated from Abraham Clark High School.
Tina worked for a computer company in New York City for several years before being employed as an Administrative Assistant at Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) in Newark, NJ. She was also employed by AT&T (which later became Lucent Technologies) for 17 years until she retired in 2001.
She took pride in her work and could make a keyboard "sing." She was very meticulous and would not stop until her assignments were picture perfect.
Tina loved to serve. She spent countless hours of her time serving in various ways in church and in the Order of Eastern Star. Oh how she loved being an Eastern Star. Her mother was an Eastern Star and she grew up watching her attend Ladies of Knight's Templar meetings. She was captivated by her mother's devotion and knew that one day she, too, would serve. Tina wanted to follow in her mother's footsteps, so she became an Eastern Star in 1968.
She was destined to serve and was extremely proud to be a part of the Order of Eastern Stars. She served diligently in the following capacities: She was the Past Matron of Queen Esther Chapter # 4, of Roselle, NJ; Past District Deputy, 3rd Masonic District; Past Royal Matron of Emma L. Coleman Chapter; Order of Amaranth; Past Heroin of Jericho, Ladies of Knight's Templar; Ada Court Daughter of Sphinx; Past Most Excellent Rose and Deputy, Bethany College, Roses of Seven Seals; Past Grand Matron, Orient Grand Chapter, Order of Eastern Stars, Inc., State of New Jersey; Supreme Board of Directors of Supreme Royal & Exalted Court of Amaranth; Past Assistant Recorder, Supreme Grand Court; Ancient Arabic Order Daughters of Sphinx, North and South America; Supreme Secret Excellent Rose; Supreme Grand College, Roses of Seven Seals.
She worked enthusiastically in each of these Houses and deeply believed in the purpose and true meaning of sisterhood and service as a Sister in the Order of Eastern Star.
Tina loved and trusted the Lord with all of her heart. She became a member of Shiloh Baptist Church in Elizabeth, NJ under the leadership of the Reverend George L. Harris. In recent years, she was not able to attend service as regularly as she would've liked due to her illness, but she always kept God first place in her heart.
One of Her Favorite Scriptures: "I will lift up my eyes to the hills – from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth." Psalms: 121:1-2
She was an amazing woman who would give you the shirt off her back. She had a firm exterior that protected her delicate heart of gold. She had an inner strength and resilience beyond measure, which showed immensely as she fought through her illnesses. She touched so many lives in so many different ways, but her family meant everything to her. She loved her family above all else and would stress to them to "always stick together."
Tina was loved by so many and will truly be missed.
