Sunrise for Rev. Dr. Mollie W. Davis was May 17, 1926 in Madison Heights, Virginia, daughter of the late James "Jim" Jones and Ruth Wayne-Jones. She received her early education in the Lynchburg, Virginia Public School system. She accepted the Lord as her personal savior at an early age.
Rev. Dr. Mollie W. Davis met and married James L. Davis in 1946. They would have celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary on June 15th. As James went to war, Rev. Dr. Mollie W. Davis entered school to become a licensed Beautician where she studied under Madame C. J. Walker. After the war died down, Rev. Dr. Davis traveled to Europe with her husband. It was in Germany where their daughter Lisa was born. As James continued his service abroad, Rev. Dr. Davis decided to stay in the United States and settle down in New Jersey in 1961.
In 1964, another child J. Gregory was welcomed into the family. She also joined Second Baptist Church that same year.
In 1986, she received a call from the Lord to go into ministry. However, the timing was not right for her. The persistence to the call of ministry was strong and she finally said "Yes" and was licensed in January 1995. On October 18, 1998, she was ordained as a Minister. She went back to Eastern Bible Institute in Irvington, New Jersey where she climbed the latter of education to receive her first Doctorate degree in Divinity in 1999. She continued and received her second Doctorate in the "Theology of Divinity" where she graduated as Valedictorian of her class in 2000. She wrote a book titled, "Sin, Sin, Sin." Her book was so well written that the dean of the school used her book for many years as an example of how to write a book for future doctorate students.
After moving to New Jersey, Rev. Dr. Davis worked at Magnus Organ in Rahway on the Assembly line. She was later employed at Alpha Wire in Linden as a Spooler until 1976. She then became one of the best-known babysitters in the area. She was very popular and in demand by many.
Although she hated to turn anyone away, she still cared for as many as ten to twelve children at a time. Many who have continued to stay in touch with her for years.
Rev. Dr. Mollie W. Davis enjoyed working for the Lord at Second Baptist Church as an Associate Minister and she served in many ministries. One of her earliest passions in the church was working as a Missionary. She became President of the Missionaries where she was fondly known as "The General." She served for 30 years and was later appointed President Emeritus of the Missionary Circle.
Rev. Dr. Mollie W. Davis was also known as a Girl Scout Leader. Her first camping trip was her last. She walked out of a tent and saw a snake! There were no more camping trips for her!
Rev. Dr. Mollie W. Davis was involved in many programs. When she started something, it would continue for years. For example, one Christmas season she collected items for a family whose home was burned down. For the next five years, when someone had a fire, she was the one to call. She made sure each family had what they needed to start over again. A few of the programs, she was involved in included, President of the Roselle – Roselle Park Interfaith Council, The Spiritual Life Clergy Women of New Jersey, AT&T Volunteers (sewing hundreds of Teddy Bears for Children in the Hospital), Middlesex and Union Counties Baptist Association, Lot Carrey Missionary Association. There are too many to name.She was a recipient of the Sojourner Truth Award and numerous accolades and awards.
One Friday, May 26, 2017, just two short weeks after James passing, he returned to take her home with him, and she answered Gods call to come. She was preceded in death by her husband, James L. Davis of Linden; sister, Julia Jones; and a baby brother who died shortly after birth.
Rev. Dr. Mollie W. Davis will always be lovingly and fondly remembered by her children: Lisa R. Davis and J. Gregory Davis both of Linden, NJ; three grandchildren: Marxus and Michael Cummings of New Jersey and Mieyana Sulton of Maryland; six great-great-grandchildren; one nephew, Marty L. Jones; first cousins: Ethel May Saunders-Hunt and Luther Saunders of Virginia and Cornelia Wayne of Pennsylvania; sister-in-law, Gladys Morgan of Virginia; dear friends: Brenda Davis and Reverend Claudette J. Jones; and a host of nieces, nephews, church family and many other relatives and friends.
