Jessie L. Dowdy was born on December 14, 1941 in Kenbridge, Virginia, daughter of the late Jesse Hite and Larra Webb Hite. When she was sixteen, the family moved to Newark, New Jersey where Jessie attended South Side High School. She moved to Baltimore, Maryland and lived there for about 30 years.

Jessie met and married William Dowdy.

She was employed as an Operating Room Technician at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland for 25 years, retiring in 1996. In addition, she worked with Dr. Ben Carson.

In 2000, Jessie moved back to New Jersey where she moved in with her sister, Katherine Hopkins.

She loved the Lord and found guidance in New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. Her favorite Bible verse was I Corinthians 13:13: "When I was a child I spoke as a child I understood as a child I though as a child; but when I became a man I put always childish things."

Jessie was a mild mannered and likeable person. She liked to wear stylish clothes to dress to impress. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends. She loved dogs, particularly poodles. She had several poodles and three of their names were "Peppie," "Poncho," and "Pierre."
On Tuesday, May 23, 2017, she was called Jessie home to be with the Lord.

She was predeceased by her brother, Collen Lambert, and sister, Bernice Lattimer.

Jessie leaves behind a husband, William Dowdy; six siblings: Katherine Hopkins, Ernest Hite (Mable), Joe Lambert, Murdie Powell (Willie), Melba Colbert, and Thelma Harris (Michael); nephew, George Lambert; and a host of dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

She loved and was loved by all. We miss Jessie but know that she is now without pain and in God's care. Three things will last forever faith, hope and love – the greatest of these is love.
