Derrick James Cooper, Sr. was born on June 10, 1952 on a former U.S. Army base, Camp Kilmer in Piscataway, New Jersey, son of the late Inez Boyd and James Willis Cooper. He was raised and lived in Linden, New Jersey his entire life. Derrick graduated from Linden High School in 1970 where he excelled in basketball.

Derrick, was known as "Ricky" to his family, "Coop" to his close friends and "Heavy Hitter" to the trucking community, was a loving husband, father and friend. Everyone that knew him, knew that he loved being on the road, whether he was riding on his motorcycle or in his 18-wheeler truck.

Derrick was a Truck driver for over 30 years. He drove 18-wheeler trucks for numerous companies on the East Coast. In 1994, he and his wife, Michele started their own successful trucking company known as D&M Trucking in Linden. Due to illness, he retired on September 23, 2005.

He was a dedicated member of Heard A.M.E. Church where he served as an Usher under the leadership of Rev. T. R. Goyins.

Derrick was a Mason of Acacia Lodge No. 23 F&AM PHA in Roselle. He was a member of Golconda Noble Shriners Affiliation in Newark.

He enjoyed being a member of Newark Knights Motorcycle Club. He was also an excellent cook and a great bowler.
Derrick loved road trips and taking his family, especially his children and their friends to amusement parks. He was quiet man with a good heart.

On Friday, May 19, 2017, Derrick James Cooper, Sr. passed in peace in the comfort of his home at the age of sixty-four.

He was preceded in death by his beautiful daughter, Stacey Cooper in 1979.

Derrick leaves to cherish his memories, his loving wife of 44 years, Michelle Denise Cooper; son, Derrick J. Cooper II (Saidah) and daughter, Tracey D. Kirby; four grandchildren: Latasia, Jahiese, Ahmaad and Rhian; sister-in-law, Joan Hayes; and a host of dear relatives and friends.
