LAPORTA – Helen Dorothy (Nawalaniec) LaPorta, 85, of Winsted, CT and Juniper, FL, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 20, 2017 at her home with the daughters by her side. She was the loving wife of the late Thomas V. LaPorta for 57 years. Born on September 18, 1931 in Torrington, CT; she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Rose (Stanislawscyk) Nawalaniec.

Helen was a graduate of Torrington High School, Class of 1949, where she served as Vice President of her class and was a cheerleader for four years, including when she cheered at the Boston Garden when THS competed in the New England basketball championships in 1948. Following graduation, she was employed by the City of Torrington in the Welfare Department under Mayor Daley. She also wrote a monthly paper named "News from Home" to men and women in the service during the Korean War, and assisted service members requesting addresses of their friends. She was also a licensed Funeral Director and worked with her husband at LaPorta Funeral Home in Torrington.

Helen was known as a friend to all, and enjoyed meeting new people everywhere she went. She loved going to breakfast every morning at the Flip'n Grill and enjoying dinners with old and new friends at the Tributary Restaurant in Winsted. She spent her summers at Highland Lake surrounded by her loving family and friends and truly enjoyed entertaining guests with her cooking and trying new recipes and drinks.

She was active in social circles in Torrington and Winsted, as well as Jupiter, FL. She was a parishioner of St. Peter's Church of both Torrington and Jupiter, FL and was a member of the Anita Garibaldi Society of Torrington, Elks Club of Torrington, Friends of Main Street in Winsted and the Watershed Association of Highland Lake. Helen and Tom were longtime members of Torrington Country Club, as well as Jonathan's Landing Golf Club of Jupiter, FL. She organized a Women's Putting Club at Jonathan's Landing and ran the club for over ten years.

She is survived by her children, Janis LaPorta and Diane Shugrue and her husband Steven, all of Torrington; eight grandchildren, Garrett, Matthew and wife Erin, Jonathan and wife Amy, Thomas Eucalitto, Carly Grgach and husband Chris, Meaghan, Conor Shugrue and Victoria Bosio; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased in death by three brothers, Walter, Edward and Stanley Nawalaniec and two sisters, Blanche Cisowski and Jennie Dzinski.

The family would like to acknowledge the compassionate caregivers for the special love and care they gave Helen.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, May 27, 2017 at St. Joseph's Church, Winsted at 10 AM. Burial will follow at St. Francis new Cemetery, Torrington.
