The sunrise for James LeRoyal Davis was on January 17, 1922 in Amherst County, Virginia, son of the late Charles Davis, Sr. and Mattie Payne-Davis. He was educated in the Amherst County Public School system. As a young boy, James was a member of Scott Zion Baptist Church in Madison Heights, Virginia. Upon moving to Linden, New Jersey in 1961, he became a member of Second Baptist Church in Roselle.
James met and married Mollie W. Jones and were blessed with two children. He joined the United States Army when the country was beginning their involvement in World War II. He traveled the world and came through the perils of that war. In 1950, James reported for duty in the Korean War and a few years later, he was commissioned to the Vietnam War conflict. He retired in 1963 with the rank of Sergeant First Class and earned ten medals, awards and badges including 1st Class AAA and Expert (CBN) 2nd Class Gunner Badges. He was known as "Serg" by those he worked with.
Upon his discharge from the Army, he was employed at Rahway State Prison in Rahway, New Jersey where his military experience earned him respect from the inmates as well as his constituents. He remained employed until he retired in October 1982. After retirement, he worked for the City of Linden as an Inspector for construction overseeing various jobs throughout the city.
James was an avid Fisherman and enjoyed fishing with many of his friends from work. He also enjoyed a good game of Poker. He was also known for his sense of humor that could make you laugh for hours.
On Friday, May 12, 2017, was the sunset for James LeRoyal Davis and he answered the Master's call to enter the pearly gates.
He was preceded in death by his four brothers: Edmond Davis, Willie Clark, Charles Davis and George Davis; and seven sisters: Golene Mays, Rovella Cox, Susie Carmine, Ethel Morgan, Martha Davis, Mary Davis and Bertha Angelee Davis-Hughes.
James will always be remembered by his devoted wife, Rev. Dr. Mollie Davis, where this coming June 15th they would have been married for 71 years; daughter, Lisa R. Davis; son, J. Gregory Davis both of Linden, New Jersey; sister, Gladys Morgan of Virginia; three grandchildren: Marxus and Michael Cummings of New Jersey and Mieyana Sulton of Maryland; six great-grandchildren; dear friend, Mr. Marshall Parker; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
