Ethel Holmes-Mitchell was born on February 29, 1929 in Sumter, South Carolina where she was raised. She was the daughter of the late James and Louise Holmes. Ethel met and married Thadious Mitchell in Sumter. From this union, they were blessed with three sons: Thadious, Jr., Joseph and McKinley. After the family moved to New Jersey, their baby girl Robin was born. Ethel lived in Linden, New Jersey before relocating to Roselle 18 years ago.
A hardworking woman, Ethel worked as a Support Counselor at Woodbridge State School, now Woodbridge Developmental Center, for 35 years and she retired in the early 2000s.
She was best known for her generous heart and always caring and giving to others, as well as her sassy attitude. Her witty remarks were always on time.
On Sunday, April 23, 2017, Ethel Holmes-Mitchell answered the Master's call at Trinitas Hospital in Elizabeth at the age of 88.
She was predeceased by her husband, James Mitchell; son, Thadious Mitchell, Jr.; three sisters: Jeanette Rodman, Nora Colclough and Jessie Mae Richburg; two brothers: Arthur Holmes and George Holmes; and grandson, David.
Ethel leaves to cherish her memories, her two sons: Joseph Mitchell of Roselle, NJ and McKinley Mitchell of Washington, DC; daughter, Robin Mitchell of Linden, NJ; daughter-in-law, Wenda; brother, Richard Holmes of Linden, NJ; sisters, Arlene Holmes of CA and Flossie Green of Newark, NJ; grandchildren: Shaunti, Asia, Kyle and Courtney; 15 great-grandchildren; cousin/daughter, Sharon; as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
