Mrs. Marguerite Elizabeth Mooney Lara sprouted from God's Human garden on July 11, 1929, in Luling , TX, to William Pierce Mooney and Marguerite Elizabeth Mooney. She was the only girl and the "princess" to her brothers, Walter Fletcher, William P. Mooney, Jr. and Lester C. Mooney. Raised in San Antonio, she received her formal education, and graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School, University of the Incarnate Word with a Bachelor of Science degree and the University of Texas at San Antonio with a Master of Arts degree in Education. She retired from Edgewood Independent School District as an educator with over 35 years devoted to educating and shaping the lives of countless children from Head Start, First Grade and Third Grade. Determined to remain active, she continues to teach after retirement in Los Angeles, CA, at Ebony Learning Tree, a private school. Also, in Oklahoma City, OK, she taught Business Communications at Wright Career College. Marguerite received many accolades over the years, for example, in high school she was recognized for her acting abilities as a member of the Drama Club and was named "Female Athlete of the Year". In the education arena, she was recognized in "Who's Who Among America's Teachers" and selected "Teacher of the Year" at Wright Career College. Edgewood Federal Credit Union Board of Directors recognized her for "Outstanding Service, Dedication & Commitment' to the Edgewood Community. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association and National Education Association. She was a member of The Modernairs and The Birthday Club civic organizations, who gives scholarships to high school students. While in Los Angeles, she ventured into a part-time "fun" profession-being an 'extra' in movies, such as "Primary Colors".
Marguerite was a devoted Christian. She was raised in the African Methodist Episcopal Church (AME) and was active since childhood. At Bethel AME Church in San Antonio, she participated in the Young People's Department (YPD) and Youth Choir; as an adult, Marguerite was a member of Usher Board #1 and the Senior Choir. She was active in Sunday School, Bible Study, Women's Missionary Society (WMS), Bethel AME Toastmaster's and Vacation Bible School. After relocating to Los Angeles, CA, she joined Bookins AME Church and continued to be an active member of WMS, Lay Organization, Sunday School, Bible Study and worked with the youth. Later, Marguerite was one of the founding members of Community Abundant Life Church (CALC), where she continued working diligently in the church participating in Sunday School, Bible Study and worked with the youth. While at CALC she received a certificate of completion for Disciple - Becoming Disciples Through Bible Study." In Oklahoma, she worked in various fundraisers such as "Women on the Move - A Night of Fashion, Fun and Elegance" and "Dinner & Knowledge featuring Judge Mablean Ephriam" benefiting Sherman Chapel AME Church. In Washington State, Marguerite was a member of Allen AME Church in Tacoma, she continued to participate in the WMS and he Lay Organization. She participated in" Family & Friends" Prayer Group and Bible Study in Renton, WA.
Marguerite married her high school sweetheart Edison R. Lara and from that union Cecelia Elaine Lara was born. She was a devoted, loving and kind mother to her baby "Cela." It became a running joke that she was "kidnapped by Cecelia" after taking an early retirement, she drove with family and friends to Los Angeles at her daughter's suggestion and made her home happily with Cecelia. She often said, she would have never traveled so many places, had she not been kidnapped by her baby.
Marguerite wore many titles but the one she loved the most was the title Mom to her only child Cecelia. She had a heart to love, she also was the Godmother and aunt of two - Nickee Drisdale Evans and Danyelle Drisdale, loving aunt to Deborah Mooney-Richardson, Samuel K. Mooney, Ava Gillispie, Kelley Mooney and a host of other beloved nieces and nephews. There were others who were like family, her children really, who helped Cecelia take care of and love Marguerite, Bobby K. Lambert, Yolanda Sayles, and Vornadette Simpson.
