Robert "Bob" Edwin Chilcoat was the oldest son of Ed and Bernice (Spangler) Chilcoat. Bob was born on the family farm, east of Stanton, on September 7, 1925. He passed away Sunday March 19, 2017 in Sahuarita, AZ.
Bob attended rural school through the 8th grade at District #5 near his home. He was a proud member of the Stanton High School Class of 1943. College was postponed for service in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 until 1946. After the war, the G.I. Bill afforded him the opportunity to attend the University of Nebraska and then Doane College, where he received his B.A. in 1950.

On August 5, 1947 he and Mary Jane "Janie" Kingsley were married at New England Congregational Church in Stanton. They moved to Crete, Nebraska while they completed school at Doane, then returned to the farm in 1950 to raise their family and to enjoy a full and rewarding life together.

Bob was a lifelong member of the New England Congregational United Church of Christ in Stanton, where he served his church on various boards and committees. He was a longtime member, and president, of the Stanton Community Schools Board of Education, and a 70-year member of Northern Light Lodge #41, AF & AM. Bob served on the Stanton County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Board in the 1950's and 60's. He was an early adopter of terraces, waterways, contour farming, and ridge-till and no-till planting, all of which reduce wind and water erosion, conserving moisture for growing crops.

Bob loved the outdoors. He enjoyed the spring calving season on the farm. He was an avid fisherman and hunter. He and Janie travelled during the less busy months, and he learned to enjoy her penchant for wandering down the back roads. He enjoyed Big Band music, a good discussion, and solving a tough Double-Acrostic puzzle. In 1984 he became a "Friend of Bill W." Working the AA program brought healing and peace in Bob's life.

After Janie's death in 1994, Bob married Shirley (Roker) Coyle on August 3, 1996. They resided on the family farm and in Green Valley, AZ until travel became difficult and they made their permanent home in Arizona.

Bob is survived by his wife Shirley; his brother Bill (Nancy) of Omaha, NE; sons Bob Jr. (Chris) of Stanton; Jack (Margaret) of Kansas City, MO; David (Barry) of Panama, NE; and daughter Judy (Tim) Lichti of Shickley, NE; grandchildren Andy, Allison, and Ben Chilcoat, Becky (Shannon) Lenser, Katie (Caleb Hendrickson) and Chris Lichti, Erin (Van) VanderSchaaf and Anna (Lane) Baker; great-grandchildren Janie, Michael, and Emily Lenser, and Eli and Jude VanderSchaaf. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Janie; an infant son James; an infant grandson Phillip; and daughter-in-law Jane (Scherer).
