Robert Edward Sanford passed into peace on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at his home. Born in Wilmington, Delaware, he was the son of the late Robert Lee Sanford and Emma Hales Fontaine.

Robert attended Claymont High School. His class was the first to integrate the Delaware Public School system in 1952. His class desegregation set the stage for and was cited in the landmark United States Supreme Court decision, Brown vs. The Board of Education in 1954. Immediately following high school, Robert enlisted in the United States Navy. He served two consecutive tours of duty that included extensive travel abroad. After being honorably discharged, he became a Merchant Seaman for Sun Oil Company where he served as a ship navigator until retirement.
Robert spent most of his life in the military and on the high seas as a Merchant Seaman. Robert loved traveling the world and the sea.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by one sister, Styron Saunders. Robert leaves to cherish fond memories: his nephew, Robert Saunders; nieces Dawn Lucas and Teresa Saunders; four grandnephews, David R. Richardson (Katherine), Cephus H. Richardson, Michael Lucas and Tyron Lucas; a brother in law, William Saunders; cousin David Hales; a special friend Wayne Trotter, and a host of other relatives and friends.
