Donna (Borkenhagen) Mazzoni, 97, of New Britain, widow of Aldo Mazzoni, passed away Saturday (October 1, 2016) at Jerome Home. Born in Crookston, Minnesota, she lived in New Britain since 1946. Donna exemplified the best of the "Greatest Generation". After Pearl Harbor, Donna joined the WAVES (Women Accepted for Voluntary Emergency Service). While at the recruiting station, she met her sister Lois. Both decided to join without there parent's knowledge. While in the service, Donna met her future husband Aldo and relocated to New Britain after her military service. Aldo predeceased Donna, dieing young in 1962. She worked at the New Britain Housing Authority for 37 years, retiring in 1985. She was a member of South Church in New Britain; the Women's Association of the church; "The Group" at the church and the Soroptimist Club of New Britain. She was also a former volunteer at New Britain General Hospital and the Central CT Chapter of the American Red Cross.

Donna is survived by her dear cousin, Betty Nisbet of Crookston, Minnesota, who phoned or wrote to Donna every week. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews including Geraldine Kendall, Raymond Gill, Robert Mazzoni, Leonard Mazzoni, Louis Mazzoni, William Mazzoni, and there families, as well as other relatives around the U.S. Donna's family would like to extend special thanks to Donna's longtime assistant, Jamie DeJesus of New Britain and her family; her liv-in aid Barbara Daley at the Orchards in Southington and to the staff at the Orchards and the Jerome Home in New Britain.

A Memorial Service will be held Wednesday 10 AM in the Erwin Chapel of South Church, 90 Main Street, New Britain. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Calling hours are Tuesday 5 to 7 PM at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 538 Preston Ave, Meriden, CT 06450. Carlson Funeral Home, New Britain is assisting with arrangements.
