Alma B. Anderson, 97, of Old Saybrook and formerly of New Britain passed away on August 24. She was married to Kenneth G. Anderson for over 62 years. He predeceased her in 2000. Born in New Britain on September 19, 1918, she was the daughter of Edmund and Emma Bielert. She was also predeceased by her son Lawrence Anderson, her sister Eleanor Krawiec, and brothers Leonard and Ernest Bielert. She was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church in New Britain. There she was a charter member of the Altar Guild and the Lutheran Church Women. She was also a member of Martha Chapter Order of Eastern Star in New Britain.
Alma worked at Fafnir Ball Bearing Co. for many years as a typist. She volunteered at New Britain General Hospital and when she left after 40 years of service was the longest serving volunteer there. In the 1980's she started volunteering for the State Police, following her husband who had been a sworn auxiliary officer since the 1950's. At that time the couple put in more than 60 hours a week at the Westbrook barracks. In 1989, Alma and Ken were selected for special recognition in the Courant's Annual Volunteer Recognition Program. She continued to volunteer past her 93rd birthday. She also enjoyed playing bingo at the Westbrook Elks Lodge and watching the UConn Women's Basketball games.
She will be sadly missed by her two daughters Lenore Anderson and her longtime companion Ernie Sparaco of Old Saybrook and Linda Nolf and her husband David of Mystic, CT and daughter-in-law Mary of Niantic, CT., and Kissimmee, Fl. She leaves 4 grandchildren, Kenneth Anderson and his wife Amy of Nashua, NH, Todd Anderson and his wife Wendy of Wheat Ridge, CO,, Gregory Anderson and his wife Meaghan of Denver, CO., and Cristina Nolf and her husband, Kirk Jordon of Long Beach CA. She also leaves 5 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services are Monday 10 AM at St. John's Lutheran Church, 295 Arch Street, New Britain, CT 06051. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Rose Hill Memorial Park. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. John's Lutheran Church or to the Kenneth Anderson State Police Scholarship Fund, Department of Public Safety, 1111 Country Club Rd.
