Ruth (Gjerpen) Schaffer, 87, of Newington, widow of Walter R. Schaffer, passed away Thursday August 11, 2016 at the Hospital of Central Connecticut in New Britain. A New Britain native, Ruth graduated from New Britain High School, class of 1947, and was a resident of Newington since 1954. She worked at CL&P and later at the Weathervane Distribution Center for eight years. Ruth was a member of St. Matthews Lutheran Church in New Britain; the Mr. and Mrs. Club of the church; was a former member of the church choir; and assisted in many other church activities.
Surviving is a son, Jeffrey Schaffer of Vernon and his companion, Debi Nowacki of Killingworth; a daughter, Claudia Concannon and her husband William of Greenwich; a sister, Marit Pyle of North Andover, MA; a sister-in-law, Georgette Gjerpen of Newington; three loving grandchildren, Kristin Harris and her husband Christopher of Boston; Molly Denihan and her husband Conor of Manhasset, LI, NY; and William Concannon Jr. of Washington, DC; two beloved great grandchildren, Campbell Marie Denihan and Emma Kathleen Denihan, as well as an expected great grandson in September; several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Walter, she was predeceased by two brothers, Karl and Lawrence Gjerpen and a sister, Ingrid Davies. Ruth's family wishes to express sincere thanks to the staff at Cedar Mountain Commons in Newington for all the care shown to our mother.
Funeral services are Monday 10 AM at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, 99 Franklin Square, New Britain, CT 06051. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery. Calling hours are Sunday 5 to 7 PM at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Matthews Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
