Carrie Mae Thomas Slater was born January 25, 1937 in Hazlehurst, Georgia. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, the late Mercy D. Thomas and Sadie E. Hall Thomas. She peacefully transitioned to eternal life at Taylor Hospital on Tuesday, June 14, 2016. Carrie attended Chester Public Schools and graduated from Chester High School in 1954. She furthered her education at the Wilmington School of Nursing, Wilmington, Delaware, and was the first African American to graduate from that school as a registered nurse. She firmly believed in having a good education. Carrie also put God first in her life and accepted the Lord Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age.

Carrie was previously employed with Sun Oil Company, Crozier Hospital, and Taylor Hospital. She was a dedicated and tireless worker who loved and honored being a registered nurse. She believed in working hard and letting your work speak for your character. At home she definitely was the boss.

On June 16, 1965 Carrie married her sweetheart, Juan J. Slater. Juan and Carrie enjoyed traveling back and forth to Cape May and Wildwood, New Jersey, along with their son, Richard and his Family. The Family spent summers at the Jersey shore and created many cherished memories. Carrie could sing and was an awesome cook who shared recipes with her loving family. Her banana pudding was legendary and Family favorite during the Holidays and gatherings. Carrie also enjoyed spending time with her First Cousins, Janice Miller, Robert McCants, Gloria Dennis, Jeanette and James Stephens, and Melvin Burke. Her cousins were more like her siblings. They all stayed in constant communication through the years.

Carrie leaves to mourn a devoted and dedicated Husband Juan J. Slater, one son, Richard Slater, (Yolanda), one stepson, Fred Hamilton, (Marcella); eight grandchildren, Saleema T. Waters, Richard E. Slater, Jr., Matthew J. Slater, India S. Slater, Demetria Hamilton, Fred Hamilton Jr., Latoya Hamilton, Michael Hamilton; three great grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
