Earline Backus was born on August 30, 1924 in Braddock, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania to Benjamin Wardy and Henrietta Richardson. She was an only child and was raised and educated in Florence, South Carolina.

On May 11, 1943 Earline was united in holy matrimony to Alphonso Backus, Sr., in Florence, South Carolina, They moved to Brooklyn, New York in 1945. This union produced five children: Alise J. Backus, Patricia Hand, Alphonso Backus, Jr. (deceased). Aneitha Santana, and Tyrone Backus.
Earline then moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1955 and settled in the West Philadelphia area.

In the 1980's she lived with her son, Alphonso Backus, Jr. and worked as a housekeeper and baby sitter for many years. She loved children and enjoyed music, dancing, and singing, had a happy personality and loved holiday gatherings with family and friends. She was very helpful, supportive and provided a good listening ear to any one who need her. Over the years Earline would always be with all of us cooking in the kitchen on holidays and different occasions.

Earline Backus joined Concord Baptist Church in Philadelphia in the early 1990's. She had a group Bible study in her home weekly, which she loved. She loved visiting and spending week ends with her family and especially at birthday gatherings.
In 2009 Earline moved to Chester, Pennsylvania. She enjoyed the social gatherings was loved by her neighbors.

Earline joined Community Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. Thaddeus Kirkland, where she was baptized and attended faithfully until her health failed. Even through her medical disability, which impacted the rest of her life, she always professed how much she loved the Lord. She constantly read her bible and shard many afternoons with the church Missionary group who visited and prayed with her frequently. They would visit her regularly in the nursing home and she always had a smile for her visitors. On July 4, 2016 she was suddenly called home to be with the Lord. she will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

In addition to her previously mentioned children, she leaves to cherish fond memories her grandchildren, Gwendolyn Backus, the late Charles "Chuckie" Backus, Carvin Backus, Aneitha Faltz (Ernie), JoAnna Crump, Solomon Sheard, Tonya Backus, Lisa Backus, Sarahi Santana, Barbara Gallimore (Gary) and a host of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
