Elizabeth W. "Betty" Stewart Rushing, age 88 of Chester, Pennsylvania departed this life on Wednesday, May 4, 2016, surrounded by family. Born on May 11, 1927, Betty was the daughter of the late James and Katherine Stewart. She was also the wife of the late Essix W. Rushing, who passed away on June 6, 1996.

Raised in a Christian home, she was a lifelong member of Murphy A.M.E. Church, where she was appointed to the Stewardess Board # 3 (which is now Board # 2) and served on the Board for over 30 years. Betty was a member of the Ellen Tyree Missionary Society for 37 years and at one time served as Vice President for eight years. Betty was a member of the senior Usher Board and past Leader of Class #13. Betty's favorite scripture was the Twenty - Third Psalm, "The Lord is My Shepherd", and her favorite hymn was "Walking Around Heaven All Day" sung by her niece, Kathryn.

"Betty" attended the Chester Public Schools, thereafter dedicating her time and energy to supporting her family and friends in any and every endeavor needed.

In addition to her late husband, Essix W. Rushing, and her parents James and Katherine Stewart, Betty was pre-deceased by five siblings: James Linwood Stewart, James Stewart, II, Barbara Lester, Jeanette Hales, and Katherine Pringle; three sons: Hodges Stanley Rushing, Lewis Rushing, and Ronald Stewart; one granddaughter, Susan Rushing, and one daughter-in-law, Marion Starkey-Stewart.

Betty leaves to cherish her memory, her loving daughter, Brenda Jackson of White Plains, New York; two sons, Leroy Rushing and Earnest Rushing, both of Chester, Pennsylvania, one aunt, Florence Cassell of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; one daughter-in-law, Sandra Rushing, her caregiver, and a special daughter Barbara Wilson.

Also to cherish her memory are nine grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter, Amari Stewart. Betty was the God-mother to all ten children of her friend, Ruby McCummins, and was loved by nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and her Pennell Street family.
