Samuel Richard Bernard Sr., was one of seven children born in Ward, PA to the late Jonathan Linfred Bernard and Reba Brown Bernard on December 29, 1925. He departed this life on March 23, 2016.

Samuel attended the Chester public school system and graduated from Chester High School. He served in the United States Navy and is a Veteran of WWII. Samuel was always a hard worker being a child of the great depression. He began working in the shipyards employed as a welder at the New York Shipyard and the Electric Boat Company in Groton, Connecticut. He returned to Pennsylvania in the mid 1960's and worked at the Naval Shipyard in Philadelphia for over 25 years.

Samuel was a faithful member at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Chester, Pennsylvania where he was appointed Sexton at the Church, providing janitorial services. After retiring at age 65 he volunteered at the St. Mary's Food Cupboard for over twenty years. Because of his commitment to the community, Mr. Bernard was well loved and respected by his neighbors on Eighth Street because he was always smiling and willing to extend a helping hand to those in need.
He was an active supporter to his community as well as a strong supporter of The President of The United States, Barack Obama. He served as a volunteer for Meals on Wheels delivering food to the elderly. Because of his volunteerism and monetary contributions to the scholarship fund, he was honored by the Chester Branch NAACP at their Annual Banquet.
Samuel was an avid reader and the Philadelphia Inquirer was one of his favorite publications. He was a big sports buff and enjoyed watching golf Tiger Woods play golf, Serena and Venus Williams play Tennis, and enjoyed attending Phillies baseball games and collegiate basketball games.
Samuel was the last remaining son of five brothers, Linfred "Buddy", Elwood "Woody", Clifford "Biddy" and Edward "Ned" Bernard.

He leaves to cherish his fond memories three sons, Samuel Thomas, Samuel R. Bernard, Jr., and Stacey Bernard; two sisters Mary McClamb and Nancy Pritchard; one brother in law James McClamb; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy, Suzanne and Evelyn Gibbs; eight grandchildren, Brian Thomas, Jada and Jeremy Poller, Tenisha, Takisha and Tammy Harmon, Joshua R. Bernard, and Tiffany Bernard; eight great grandchildren, Kaliph Propst, Embra Redd, Dahmir Moore, Niaylah Richardson, Ramaj Poller, Jahsere and Jahsyed Cruz, Tylor McDuffy and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
