Mae Emma Cross gained her wings in glory on Friday, November 20, 2015, surrounded by her loving family. She was born to William Henry and Mary Alice (Dickerson) Carter on August 29, 1929 in Sycamore, Pittsylvania County, Virginia.

The Carters moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey when Mae was a youngster and she attended local schools. After school, she began working in her secretarial gifts while working for the Civil Service Commission in Washington, DC. Afterward she worked in Philadelphia, PA and finally returning to Atlantic City to work for Carter's Express, the family business. She also would lend a hand when needed at Carter's Press. She was many things to many people. She could be found doing taxes, organizing files, and helping anyone who came in and needed assistance.

Mae wasn't all work though. Mae was about family and friends. She married William Nathaniel Cross on October 30, 1954. From that union came five children, Leslie, Theresa, and surprisingly triplets, Brenda, Bruce, and Brian! The Cross family was complete.

Mae was a personable lady who loved EVERYONE! If you needed it and she had it, you had it! She was always willing to lend a hand and help where needed. She was there for EVERYBODY. She loved opening her home to friends and family for her famous Sunday breakfasts that extended throughout the day. All kids were welcome. Mae was a member of Caring Adult Health Care Services since 2002. She looked forward to socializing with members and staff on a regular basis. Everyone loved her! An avid Pokeno player, she enjoyed her club members and they spent many evenings together laughing, eating and enjoying each other's company as they chatted and passed the sands of time together. Her laughter could fill any room and brightened the lives of all whom she encountered.

Mae was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church at Ohio & Arctic Avenues where she sang on the Senior Choir and was in the Birthday Club until her health would not allow her to do so any longer. She remained a member of the church as they changed locations to the New Shiloh Baptist Church in 2003.

Mae will truly be missed and forever in our thoughts and in our hearts. She touched the lives of many people and provided comfort, love and joy to everyone. She leaves behind many memories of warmth and laughter. She is predeceased by her parents, William and Mary Carter and sons, Leslie and Brian Cross. She leaves to celebrate her spirit and loving memory, her husband, William Nathaniel Cross; son, Bruce Cross (Lillian); daughters, Theresa Brown (Gerald) and Brenda Cross; brothers, Leslie (Susie) and Charles Carter (Merilyn) and sister, best friend and caregiver, Lucille Coger; six grandchildren, Leteya, Doneesha, Joshua, Jonathan, Octavian and Jezlyn; and seven great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, an extended family and a host of friends.
