Dorothy  Jean Martin

Dorothy Jean Martin, widow of the late Calvin W. Martin, was born in West Grove, PA on May 27, 1926 to the late William and Helen Jackson, Sr. She attended and graduated from the Avon-Grove Schools and later enrolled in the West Chester State Teachers College, as a Music Major.

Upon entering the job market, Mrs. Martin worked at Harowe Servo Controls in West Chester before entering the Avon-Grove School System as a Third Grade Teacher's Assistant. She taught there for 6 ½ hears before transferring to the Tick Tock Early Learning in Avondale, PA. While there, she attended Cheyney State College in the evenings, taking a 2-year course in Early Childhood Development. She worked there for 21 years.

Mrs. Martin grew up in Star of Bethlehem U.A.M.E. Church and became their organist at age 9. She came back in the late 50's under Rev. Thomas Williams and has been there ever since.

In the 1980's, she attended Grace Bible Institute in Coatesville, PA in order to better serve and teach her Sunday School class and graduated, receiving the High Academic Achievement Award. She also wrote words and music to the School's Alma Mater.

Mrs. Martin has served as the Sunday School Superintendent, an Usher and a Stewardess. She was currently a Steward and had previously served as the Recording Steward and Pastor's Steward. She was the Organist at Star of Bethlehem and previously District Musician for the Northern District of the Grand Order of Tents and Leader of Mt. Olive Tent No. 26. She currently played for the U.A.M.E. Annual Conference and Conference Choir.

One of her many favorite Hymns was "He Brought Me out." One of her favorite Scriptures was "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." Philippians 4:13.

Mrs. Martin was the mother of 10 children (2 are ministers), Rev. Ronald Jackson (Beverly) of Stone Mountain, GA, Carolyn Marshall (Robert) of Orlando, FL, Jerome Jackson (Betty) of Kennett Square, PA, Gwendolyn Love (Robert) of Orlando, FL, Rev. Kent Jackson (Lisa) of West Grove, PA, Linda Parker (Maurice) of Lincoln University, PA, Keith Bryant (Crystal) of Jennersville, Shelly Brown (Patrick) of Bear DE, Scott Bryant (Carrie) of Orlando, FL, Lisa Bryant-Pierce of Oxford, PA; 27 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
