Charles William Thornton, Sr., 90, of Greenville, widower of Margaret Robinson Thornton, died Tuesday, March 3, 2015.
Born in Greenville, he was a son of the late Arthur Lloyd and Ruth Spencer Thornton.
Charles served in the United States Navy during WWII and the Korean War, and retired as Damage Control Chief.
He is survived by two daughters, Ruth Blackstock and husband Tim, and Kimberly Senn and husband David; one son, Charles W. "Bill" Thornton, Jr., and wife Ann; seven grandchildren, Timothy "T.J." Blackstock, Nicholas Blackstock, Bryan Thornton, Kristen Thornton, Jacob Senn, Jessica Senn, and Nikki Armstrong; five great grandchildren, Abby, Brayden, and Faith Blackstock, and Jacelyn Soileau, and Kaylyn Motes; and a sister-in-law, Martha Belue and husband Gary.
In addition to his wife of 48 years, he was preceded in death by a sister, Margarette Jerd; and two brothers, Lloyd and Gerhard Thornton.
The visitation will be held Friday, March 6, 2015 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Thomas McAfee Funeral Home, Northwest. The funeral service will be held Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. at Berea First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Springwood Cemetery.
