Essie Mae Sorrells was born on June 18, 1924 in Hills Prairie, Texas to Joe Tolbert and Lenora Craney. She departed this life on January 17, 2010.

During her childhood years she attended school in Hills Prairie and later moved to school in Buda, Texas.

As a devoted member of Center Union Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor O. B. Clayborne, Essie Mae accepted Christ. As her life progressed she met and married Virgil Sorrells on January 15, 1941 and moved her membership to the Bethel AME Church in Manchaca, Texas under the pastoral leadership of Pastor H. R. Jerry. After relocating, they then moved to Austin where she joined the St. Matthews Baptist Church.

Essie Mae was a hard working lady who worked as a nurse's aide at the Browns School and at Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas. She also worked as a clerical assistant at the Austin Police Department, where she later retired. She later came out of retirement and worked as a Foster Grandparent with Child, Inc. She received many awards for her accomplishments.

Essie Mae loved to play softball with her family; the only way she would play was if she was the pitcher. Being a country girl, some of her favorite foods were oxtails, greens, garden salads, gumbo and chicken delight.

She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil Sorrells; son Minister Woodie G. Sorrells; three daughters, Annie Lee Robinson, Mary A. Sorrells, and Kay Francis Sorrells; two brothers, Edward L. Owens and Melvin Owens; four sisters, Lucille McBride, Bobbie J. Hill, Rosie L. Philson and Mary Tolbert. She leaves behind to cherish her memories nine sons, Cordia Sorrells of California, Virgil Sorrells, Jr. of Manchaca, Texas, Minister Andrew Sorrells (Magalene) of Austin, Texas, Melvin Sorrells (Carolyn) of Lockhart, Texas, Carl Sorrells (Lavader) of San Antonio, Texas, Bruce L.
