William Leonard Killgore, Jr. August 24, 1929 ~ January 16, 2012
A memorial service honoring the life of William Leonard Killgore, Jr., 82, of Somerville, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 20, 2012 at Community Chapel in Lyons, with Rev. Robert Tompkins officiating. Mr. Killgore died at his home in Somerville Monday, January 16, 2012. Leonard was born August 24, 1929 in Somerville, the son of William Leonard Killgore, Sr. and Pansy (Bettis) Killgore. He graduated from High School and went on to graduate from Southern Methodist University and attended law school. Leonard loved flying many different types of military and civilian aircraft and attained the rank of Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserve. Humble beginnings in Somerville led to a life lived from the west to east coasts. Some highlights were taking his family and friends on helicopter rides over the Grand Canyon, rafting on the Colorado River, hunting in Texas, vacations in national parks, cruising the Inland Waterway, Atlantic Coast, the Bahamas, and fishing in Alaska among many others. Leonard achieved success in three separate careers: aviation, business and 25 years in politics in Washington, D.C. Throughout his life he spent many wonderful holidays on the family farm in Burleson County. Family and friends have visited Jean and Leonard at the farm for the past twenty years, spending time talking, fishing, and watching the wildlife. Leonard is preceded in death by his parents; his brother Albert Bettis Killgore and sister-in-law, Holly Killgore. Survivors include his wife Jean Cole Killgore; children and their spouses, Deborah K. and Louis Smith of Houston, Texas, Kathleen K. Tilton of Seattle, Washington, Kimberly K. and Steven Allday of Shelbyville, Kentucky, Leonard and Sandra Killgore of Boerne, Texas, Nona K. Killgore of Richardson, Texas, Pansy K. and Brian Cornett of Belton, Texas; twenty one grandchildren, Sage Alison Smith, Sarah Kathleen Smith, Daniel Louis Smith, William Nathan Smith, Kimberly Hope Smith, Heather Tilton Andrianokos, Natalie Tilton Graham, Jennifer Kimberly Tilton, Dustin Michael Tilton, Kelly Margaret Allday, Kenneth Christian Allday, April Killgore, Malachi Killgore, Caleb Christian Killgore, Issac Killgore, Grace Killgore, Elisha Killgore, Jacob William Reeder, James Allen Reeder, Jonah Thomas Reeder, and Wylie Jackson Cornett; along with six great-grandchildren; as well as nephews, Brett Bettis Killgore and Christian Carter Killgore.
