The Life and Love of Audrey Rock Kennedy Anyone who shared in the life of Audrey Rock Kennedy over her 92 years enjoyed her warmth and joy of life. Audrey was born to Edith and Raymond Rock and raised in the 7 th Ward of New Orleans, along with her siblings Raymond, Edith, Doris and Helen. Her famed culinary skills were honed in New Orleans and accounted for her coveted gumbo and crab dishes. Audrey was a scholar and educator. She graduated from Tuskegee Institute in 3 years, earned a Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, and taught kindergarten for 37 years. Generations of young children were instilled with her desire to learn. While at Tuskegee, Audrey met Fred Kennedy and they married, moved to LA/San Pedro and raised their family. Fred and Audrey were married until 2014, when Fred passed, marking 66 years of a remarkable and resilient partnership. Her relationships with friends were as significant as her family. She was known to join lifelong friends in Vegas for some probability practice on slot machines beginning with quarters. Then Virgie, her BFF, showed her the probability of increased earnings by playing the dollar machines. They were high rollers and she realized her investment with a $5000 win. Once. Audrey was the nurturing mom to us all. If you were related or extended family, Audrey’s wisdom, empathy, and hospitality invited you into her home. Gracious and strong, her annual anniversary parties were the place to be featuring the aforementioned gumbo and crab treats, famous chicken wings, German chocolate cakes and her delicious brownies. And there was always the after party where she worked the room, spreading her love and goodness. She could also step in and manage one child’s birthday party when his mom, cousin Cookie, had to be rushed to hospital to deliver another grandchild. See’s Candy alone was the key to Audrey’s heart and the way to win her favor forever. As mom to Katheryn (Fabian), Michael (Arlene), Roderick and Karen , she was an irreplaceable role model. She shone as a grandmother to Kevin (Remmie), Kim (Chad), MurphiBennett, Fabian (Whitney), Jackson, Alexandra and Morgan showering them with love and attention. There are the countless grandchildren of her extended family that participated in Easter egg hunts and swim parties and summer camps that she hosted on Sandwood Place. But nothing compared to the love for her great grandchild, Roman, who brightened the last year of her life immensely. Audrey died peacefully at home on January 2, 2021, feeling the love of family, extended family, and friends. A private burial will be held for immediate family. A party to celebrate Audrey’s life will be held later this year. In lieu of flowers, if you desire, please donate to the organization of your choice in Audrey’s name. Her common refrain from family’s “I love you” was always “ Love you more!” It was always a race to say“ Not possible!” first. No, Audrey, we loved you more than we can express. Thank you for being mom, grandma, family and friend to us all.
