Christmas at the Alexander's home and farm...full of love and giving...two sisters came together to be with their parents, spouses, children, grandmother. One was my beautiful mother, another was her sister with ready laughter and shining eyes. Valley Falls pool. A swing set. Owls in a carpeted house. Johnny Cash and country western music. Gospel music. The smell of the Methodist church, the pews, the hymnals and fans in the pews, the creaking boards, Sunday School in the basement. Calloused summer feet in white leather church shoes and all of us in homemade dresses. Walking to the park. Even further back, dinners across from the park with Aunts Vangie and Helen - and everyone was there - and everything was prepared with precision, care, and love. Laughter, hugs. Pictures of a beautiful smiling bride. Wading in the creek. Sunburns shared, bee stings treated. Recently caught catfish hanging in the bait shop - taller than myself. Grape pop for a dime. Tornado through Topeka, tornadoes everywhere. The tidy white house. Pimento cheese. Time, place, objects, space, distance, movement, events. My youth - Marcia Leonard was there and her memory is indelibly marked in my memory. My heart-felt condolences to Harry, Sheila, and the entire family.
