To Uncle Peter / Godfather

God's Garden
God looked around his garden
And found an empty place,
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest.
God's garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering
He knew you were in pain.
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.
He saw the road was getting rough
And the hills were hard to climb.
So he closed your weary eyelids
And whispered, ‘Peace bethine'.
It broke our hearts to lose you
But you didn't go alone,
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.

I'm sorry to say good-bye to my Uncle Pete, the third of the three brothers who are among the strongest memories I have of childhood, and the last child of the young couple who left Lithuania for the USA. The last time I say Pete was a visit a few years after my father's death. My first glance at Pete was like seeing my father come back to life; they looked so much alike. Far back in time, I remember many Sunday afternoons visiting the whole family on Union Street and sitting in the kitchen and listening to the grownups talk. My thoughts are with all of you as you adjust to this big loss. Mine are indeed heartfelt condolences.

I remember the first time I met Pete, not knowing I would become his daughter-in-law. I liked him right away. How lucky am I to have had such a loving, incredible man in my life for so long. Always ready with a smile, a hug, a story. He was the epitome of a life well lived. I will miss you, Pete. We all will. May your memory be a blessing. With love and admiration... Ellen
