Gilbert K. "Doc" Hammond, age 98, of Peoria, passed away on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at his home surrounded by family.

Doc was born on March 21, 1919 in Peoria, IL to William M. and Ethel Katherine (Hefele) Hammond. He married Frances Moore on June 15, 1947 in Peoria and she preceded him in death on October 25, 2016. He is also preceded in death by his parents and one brother.

Doc is survived by his daughters, Bonnie (Steven) Wilson of Brookings, OR and Cindy (Jon Thomas) Reliford of Peoria; 6 grandchildren, Melissa Wilson, Eric (Cherita) Wilson, Ryan Wilson, Ron (Karen) Reliford, Jr., Mark (Stephanie) Reliford, and Adam (Candis) Reliford; 14 great-grandchildren, Chandler, Tabby, Griffin, Bentley, Adaline, Katelin, Cullen, Kelsie, Mackensie, Max, Erik, Ryan, Camarra and Ceierra; 3 nephews; and a sister, Helen Healy of Peoria.

Doc was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corps, serving from 1942 to 1945. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Bradley in 1942 and his Masters of Arts Degree in 1951, also at Bradley. He taught one year at Rosemond High School in Christian County and he taught fifth and sixth grades in East Peoria for District 86. He was principal at Jefferson, Roosevelt and Washington school and after 33years, he retired in 1979. He was a member of the Beta Phi Theta Fraternity, a 50 year member and Deacon of Westminster Presbyterian Church and was a member of the Timber Lake Club of Peoria. Doc bowled in the Post Office League at Bowlmor and played Senior Golf at Madison Golf Course.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at 12pm at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Peoria with Rev. Denise Clark-Jones officiating. A visitation will be held 2 hours prior to the service at the church on Tuesday, June 6, 2017. Burial will follow at Parkview Cemetery in Peoria with military honors. Memorials may be made to his church.
