Our Mother, Leslie Mary Richardson, was born on May 19, 1941 in Roselle, New Jersey, daughter of the late Virginia Wortman and Lester Hodge. She attended the Elizabeth Public School system and graduated from Batton High School in 1959.

Leslie married James Richardson on August 6, 1960. This union was blessed with four beautiful girls: Linda, Barbara, Audrey and Vikki. In 1967, Leslie moved the family to Roselle, New Jersey, where she continued to raise her children as a strong, single mother.

In 1975, Leslie was trained by the State of New Jersey to work for the CETA program. Mommy loved her job and her co-workers. She loved hanging out with them after work. Later she worked at Macy's as a Customer Service Representative.

"Les," as she was affectionately called, was a no-nonsense Mom (you all know what that means). She was determined to see her daughters as women, so that is how she raised them: to be polite, articulate, well behaved and respectful. Although she did not have much, Leslie used her resources well to keep a roof over her children's heads, food in their bellies and have cute clothes on their backs. She kept it fresh, too! As kids, we would call her "Accessory Lady" because she could hook up an outfit on a budget. She loved jewelry!! She would not let anyone get away looking sloppy either. You better come correct or she would definitely let you know that your pants were too tight, that lipstick wasn't your shade or your boots were no longer in style. Leslie was always classy and stylish. She loved beautiful clothes and had an elegantly understated style. She loved shopping at QVC, and was an avid reader and was the uncontested Scrabble champion of our family.

On March 17, 1992, Mom underwent heart bypass surgery. By all accounts, she was not going to survive the surgery but God is wonderful and she pulled through. We would jokingly refer to March 17, as Mom's "other birthday." After the surgery, Leslie was taken care of by her daughter, Barbara and husband, Jerome. She relished the role of "Nana" and loved all eight of her grandchildren unconditionally.

She moved to Rahway Senior Housing Complex in Rahway where she was a Resident Advocate for many years. She was always assisting folks in the complex and was loved for her kindness and compassion.

Leslie was predeceased by her siblings: Frederick Hodge, Lester Hodge, Valderia Hodge and Anderia Hodge-Glenn.

She leaves to cherish fond memories, her four beautiful daughters: Linda Richardson, Barbara Tate and husband Jerome, Audrey Roney and husband Kendell, and Vikki Goyins and husband Ted; 5 siblings: Virginia Hodge, Helena Johnson, Regina Hunter, Patrick Hodge, and Gladys Muhummad; 8 grandchildren: Trevenia Gravesande, Manny Collins, Keyon Richardson, George Hardison, and Marcus, Avery, Hezekiah and Scooter Tate; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

We thank God for the time we had with our Mother on this earth. We praise God for allowing her beautiful transition from labor to rest.
