Shelby Young-Pollard was born on May 7, 1959 in Newark, New Jersey. He was the beloved son of Kenneth and Louise Pollard.
Shelby was educated in the East Orange Public School system where he graduated from East Orange High School and attended New Jersey Institute of Technology in Newark. He enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a Jet Mechanic in 1984. On April 4, 1985, Shelby married Sheila R. Thompson. In 1990, he re-enlisted into a second branch of the military, the United States Army. He served his country as a Communication Specialist becoming highly qualified in his field. He was highly intelligent and a very skillful marksman. He would often boast that he had lived in 36 states, 7 continents, and traveled the world.
Shelby loved life, people and adventure. His witty, charismatic nature made him fun to be with and easy to love. He was loved by two sons and a daughter and admired by many people from many walks of life. Smiles and laughter usually followed Shelby. He was a friend to many and possessed a heart of gold. He was filled with vibrant life and cheerful conversation. He took pleasure in spending time with his family and spoiling his grandchildren.
Shelby loved the Lord and was inspired to preach His word. His love for God lead him to volunteer his time at St. James AME Church, feeding and clothing the homeless and those least fortunate. Shelby took pride in his work and strived to walk on a Christian path. He enjoyed working with his hands and his children believed he could fix anything.
On May 10, 2016, Shelby Young-Pollard was called by the Lord to rest.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Craig Pollard; nephew, Rasheed Pollard; and niece, Laila I. Pollard.
Shelby was the father of three loving children: Aja R. Thompson-Dozier, Sheldon E. Pollard, and Tre E. Pollard; parents: Kenneth Pollard and Louise Pollard; Laila Pollard; wife, Sheila R. Thompson; three grandchildren: Dizay, Yazid, and Zyair; best friends of many years, Diana Jones and Jasmine Hunter; and a host of other relatives and friends. "For I am now ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course. I have kept the faith." [II Timothy 4:6-7]
