Raymond Lee Ashford, Sr., 70, of Aberdeen, passed away Jan. 22, 2016, at University of Maryland Saint Joseph Medical Center in Towson, surrounded by his loving family. He was born to Doreen E. (Pearce) Necessary, of Saltville, VA, and Baisy Lee Ashford (deceased), of Tazewell, VA, July 3, 1945, in Ipswich, England. He married wife Sandra L. Wheaton Ashford November 26, 1963 in Havre de Grace, MD. Raymond began his long and successful career in contracting as a concrete truck driver for various local concrete companies, including Davis Concrete and W. Noble Hamilton of Aberdeen. In 1971, he began his own concrete finishing company, Ashford Concrete, which operated under various trade names such as Aberdeen Concrete Contractors and Ashford Concrete and Excavating, Inc. After thriving in its initial years as a concrete finishing company, Ashford Concrete and Excavating, Inc. evolved into an excavating and masonry crew, known as Ashford Concrete Excavation and Masonry, Inc. He also owned multiple other small businesses such as County Concrete Co. in Elkton, and Ashford Dump Trucking in Aberdeen. He retired in 2013, and worked for Todd's Enterprises, driving a dump truck part time. While he was a successful local business owner, he also spent his career single-handedly supporting his wife and seven children. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sandra L. Ashford of Aberdeen; his seven children Donna J. (John) Wertsch of Havre de Grace, Tina L. (David) Shutts of Colora, Raymond L. Ashford, Jr. of North East, Susan M. (Edward) Rembold of Aberdeen, David L. (Michele) Ashford, Sr. of Rising Sun, James A. Ashford of Aberdeen, and Katherine L. Renoll (Troy Ewing) of Havre de Grace; his twenty-four grandchildren David J. Wertsch, Katelynn M. Wertsch, Patricia L. Edwards, David C. Shutts, Jr., Raymond L. Ashford III, Alyssa M. Ashford, Elizabeth A. Rembold, Edward A. Rembold III, Raymond A. Rembold, David L. Ashford, Jr., Victoria M. Ashford, Daniel K. Jourdan, Nicole A. Ashford, Arieanna Ashford, Cyndal Almond, Kimberly Ashford, Kelly Ashford, Dimitri Ashford, Mercedes Ashford, Kayla Renoll, Nathan Renoll, Tyler Renoll, and Thomas Renoll; His two step-grandchildren Catherine Sexton and Aaden Ewing; his great grand-children Madison Ashford, Brady Ashford, Ryan Ashford, Jason Wertsch, Bradley Jourdan, Jaxon Shutts, Connor Shutts, and Benjamin Rusnak, Jr.; his step great-grandchild Gabriel Cortez Bevington; his mother, Doreen E. (Pierce) Necessary, his siblings, Radford G. (Susan) Ashford, Lillian A. (Barry) Green. He is preceded in death by his two brothers, Dennis W. Ashford and Christopher N. Necessary, and his Grandchild Donald V. Rembold. His numerous family members will remember Raymond warmly as a loving and dedicated husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, son, and brother. He will be greatly missed. Family will receive friends on Sunday January 31, from 7-9 PM at Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home, P.A., 333 S. Parke Street, Aberdeen, MD. Where a funeral service will be held on Monday February 1, at 10 AM.
