David L. Borter 75, of 302 Factory St. Sugarcreek, died Monday April 13, 2015 at 3:10 AM in Community Hospice House in New Philadelphia following a courageous battle with cancer. Born May 3, 1939 in Sugarcreek he was a son of the late William and Edith (Ott) Borter. Dave retired in 2000 from Andreas Furniture in Sugarcreek after 28 years. Prior to Andreas he was employed at the former Alsco Company in Sugarcreek where he worked for 19 years. After retirement he worked part time at Smith Funeral Homes and Smith Ambulance and Livery until his illness forced him to stop. He is a member of Union Hill United Methodist Church. He is also a member of the Community Arts Council and the Sugarcreek Lions Club. Dave was a well-known woodworker and his fret work adorns churches and homes all over the area. He has won many awards with his fret work skills. Making gifts for others was Dave's ministry. He is survived by his wife the former Deloris Ross whom he married April 25, 1965 and would have celebrated their 50th anniversary next week. Also surviving are his children Denise (Randy) Garvin of Strasburg, David "Cousy" Borter of Berlin and Dennis (Jill) Borter of Stone Creek; 2 grandchildren Dennin and Jilliann Borter and a step grandson Dylan Garvin. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother Paul Borter and a sister Ruth Marino.
Funeral services will be held Friday April 17, 2015 at 11:00 AM in the Union Hill United Methodist Church at Sugarcreek. Rev. Carl Kandel will officiate and burial will follow in Union Hill Cemetery at Sugarcreek. Friends may call Thursday from 5 to 8 PM in the Smith-Varns Funeral Home at Sugarcreek and one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Memorial may be made to Community Hospice of Tuscarawas County 716 Commercial Ave. SW New Philadelphia, Ohio 44663 or Union Hill United Methodist Church Building Fund.
