Funeral services for Jim Smith, 68 year old Buffalo man who passed away early Saturday morning at the V.A. Medical Center in Sheridan, will be held May 9, 2015 at 2:00 p.m. from the Harness Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor William Dunlap officiating. Interment will be in Willow Grove Cemetery with military graveside honors immediately following the funeral. Donations in Jim's memory may be made to the St. Francis Animal Shelter in care of the Harness Funeral Home at 351 N. Adams in Buffalo. Online condolences may be made at www.harnessfuneralhome.com
James Michael Smith was born on May 11, 1946 in Denver, Colorado to Stanley and Margaret Smith. He moved with his family to Buffalo in 1953 where he grew up and went to school. He graduated from Johnson County High School in 1964. After high school he joined the U.S. Navy and served at Groton Naval Base in Groton, Connecticut. After an honorable discharge he moved to Gillette, Wyoming where he was a carpenter. He later moved to Michigan where he was a finish carpenter for several years. In the early 2000's, he moved back to Buffalo where he was a carpenter.
Jim was an avid wood worker and loved bow hunting with bows that he made. He was an accomplished carver and loved his dogs. Lately he was engaged in making pine needle basketry.
He is survived by two daughters, Jennifer Harkness and her husband Jeff of Leadville, Colorado; and Mica Smith and her husband Shane of Council Bluffs, Iowa; one son Todd Kepus and his spouse Michael Gilbert of Portland, Oregon; one brother David Smith and his wife Brucie Connell of Buffalo; two sisters, Nancy Russell Waggoner and her husband Garry of Wagoner, Oklahoma, and Diane Milnichak and her husband Tim of Casper, Wyoming; his mother Peggy Smith of Buffalo; four grandchildren and his special friends Rayma Clearwater and Cindy Moldenhauer of Buffalo. He was preceded in death by his father Stanley Smith.
