Stephen A. Brooks, 88, of Gardner, died Sunday, March 8, 2015, in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home.

Stephen was born in Gardner on September 8, 1926, son of the late Herbert E. and Adah (Keyworth) Brooks, and lived in Gardner all of his life. Stephen is a 1944 graduate of Gardner High School and a 1948 graduate of the University of Michigan. He proudly served his country in the Navy during the Korean War. Stephen worked at Conant Ball Company and was president until his retirement in 1987. Stephen was a former president of the Knowlton Foundation and the Monomonock Sporting Club, a former director of the American Furniture Manufacturer's Association, an active member of the First Congregational Church of Gardner, the North Medford Running Club and the New England Kiln Drying Association. Stephen was an avid skier, runner and hiker. He ran the Boston Marathon in 1992 and has hiked the entire Appalachian Trail. Stephen was also an Eagle Scout and former Scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troop 5.

Stephen is survived by his wife of 61 years, Phyllis C. (Jones) Brooks; one son, Calvin D. Brooks of Gardner; two daughters, Dale Ann Behar of Mamaroneck, N.Y., and Linda Brooks Sobaje of Maui, Hawaii; two brothers, Ned Saurino of New York, N.Y., and Kimbal Saurino of Orange; one sister, Martha Stearns of Plymouth; and five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Stephen was predeceased by one brother, Dr. Herbert E. Brooks Jr., and one sister, Nan Goodell.

You are invited to attend a calling hour at First Congregational Church of Gardner, 28 Green St., on Saturday, March 14, 2015, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. A memorial service will follow in the church beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Living Memorial Fund, First Congreg-ational Church, 28 Green St. Gardner, MA 01440.
