Joseph W. Blackwell, 90, died Thursday in Salem, OR. Joe was born in Long Creek, Oregon to Joseph and Doris (Osborn) Blackwell and raised by his stepfather, Henry Prichard, after his Mom passed away when he was still a young boy. He served in the US Army during WWII and fought in the Normandy, Ardennes, & Rhineland Campaigns, and the Battle of the Bulge. Upon his discharge he lived in Eastern Oregon before moving to the Coos Bay area where he lived for over 70 years, and worked in the lumber industry as a mill foreman. He married Viola Poitra in October of 1964 in California. They moved to Salem 2 years ago.

Joseph was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed camping and spending time with his family. He was a volunteer firefighter in Coos Bay and a member of the Woodworkers Union.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years Viola Blackwell; sons Joseph of Los Banos, CA, Henry of Guerneville, CA, and Timothy of California; daughter Tracy Francis of Santa Rosa, CA; step daughter Terry LaRoche of Bothell, WA; and step son Robert LaRoche of Albany; brother Charles Prichard of Gold Beach; and numerous grand, great grand, great great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Blackwell and Doris Prichard, stepfather Henry Prichard; son Martin "Marty" Blackwell; and step daughter Dorla LaRoche
Graveside services in Coos Bay will be planned at a later date. Contributions may be made to the Coos Bay Volunteer Firefighters in care of Fisher Funeral Home, 306 SW Washington St., Albany, OR 97321
