Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Wheeler, of Wheeling, W.Va., passed away Wednesday, December 17, 2014, in Liza's Place, Valley Hospice Care Center South, Wheeling, after a long illness.

Betty was born December 20, 1920, in Wheeling, W.Va., a daughter of the late George W. and Emma (Tighe) Redecker. She attended St. Joseph's Academy and was a parishioner of St. Alphonsus Church her entire life, where she was a longtime member of the Christian Mothers. She very seldom missed watching her favorite athletic teams- the Mountaineers and Steelers.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 71 years, Robert U. Wheeler; son, James Barry Wheeler; and her sisters, Rosemary Maxwell and Ruth Winters.

She is survived by her sons, Robert (Linda) of Morgantown, W.Va., Bruce (Judy) of Austin, Texas and Brad (Joanne Bosworth) of Wheeling; her grandchildren, Christopher, Julie, Kristin, Beth, Barry, Robert and Carrie; five great-grandchildren; three nieces; and a nephew.

Friends will be received from 2-4 & 6-8 pm, Sunday, December 21, 2014, at the Altmeyer Funeral Home, 1400 Eoff Street, Wheeling, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 am, Monday, December 22, 2014, at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Wheeling, with the Rev. Douglas Ondeck as celebrant. In accordance with her wishes, Betty will then be cremated. Interment will take place in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling, at the convenience of the family.

The family would like to thank Debbie Scott, Dr. Jamie Etzel, and the staff at Liza's Place, for their kindness and care during Betty's illness.
