Clara Mae Schiller of Lynden went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday morning, October 31, 2014. She was 86. Clara Mae was born July 2, 1928, in Oak Harbor, the daughter of Christian and Eva (Kammenga) Hulst. She lived there until 1963 when she moved with her family to Lynden, and was a faithful member of Faith Reformed Church for the rest of her life.
Clara Mae married Larry Schiller of Sealy, Texas on June 14, 1946, in Oak Harbor. They were married 55 years when he passed away in August 2001. Clara worked 10 years as a school secretary in Oak Harbor after high school graduation. She then worked as a part-time bookkeeper for Copeland Lumber of Lynden while her husband was the manager. Being a homemaker brought her much joy and satisfaction.
Clara Mae enjoyed traveling to other countries, camping throughout the U.S., and spending time with her family. She was an avid gardener and liked to take pictures. She spent many hours crocheting, baking, and canning. She loved to sing hymns and did so until her last days. She loved her family with all her heart, but above all she loved God, from whom she derived her strength. She was a wonderfully supportive wife, mother, and grandmother. Clara spent the last three years at Among Friends Adult Family Home being lovingly cared for by Kim, Jon and their staff.
Clara Mae was preceded in death by her husband Larry; brothers Don, Dick, and Elwyn (Bud). She is survived by son Greg Schiller of Port Townsend; daughter Wendy (Ron) Visser of Lynden; son Jeff (Cindy) Schiller of Lynden; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sister Evelyn (Dick) Anable of Oak Harbor; brother Ray (Sandra) of Sedro Woolley; sisters-in-law Gloria Hulst and Jo Ann Hulst of University Place, WA, Gladys Leatherwood of Blanco TX, Joyce Johnston and Waldine Jones of Sealy TX; and numerous other relatives.
A visitation will start at 9:00 AM, Saturday, November 8, 2014 at Gillies Funeral Home, Lynden. The graveside service will follow at Monumenta Cemetery, 10:15 AM, Saturday, and then followed by an 11:00 AM memorial service at Faith Reformed Church, 7th and Liberty Streets in Lynden. Memorials may be made to Faith Reformed Church, 300 7th Street, Lynden, WA 98264.
You are invited to share your condolences and memories in the online guestbook at www.gilliesfuneralhome.com. Arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Lynden.
