Virginia Beach - Herman Hope Barnes passed away October 25, 2014. He was born December 29, 1916 in Princess Anne County on the family farm in Nimmo. Hope was a U.S. Navy veteran of WWII and worked in the federal civil service for 36 years. He was a supervisor for many years at the Norfolk Naval Supply Center and when he retired was Director of Disposal for the Defense Property Disposal Office, Norfolk.

Hope was the son of the late Oscar B. and Daisy Murden Barnes. He was predeceased by his son, Larry N. Barnes, by sisters Annie Mae Barnes, Bertie B. Wilson, Elsie B. Hegameyer, Geneva L. Barnes, Lucille S. Cloud and by brothers, Oscar B. Barnes, Jr. and Roy C. Barnes.

He is survived by a son, Gerald H. Barnes (wife Linda), two grandchildren, Jennifer L. Keller (husband Scott), Elizabeth H. Humphreys (husband David), 4 great grandchildren, his brother Elliott W. Barnes, several nieces and nephews, and a very special friend, Doris Sumner.

The family thanks the staff at The Gardens of Virginia Beach for their very considerate care of Hope over the past 4 years.

Altmeyer Funeral Home on Greenwich Rd. is handling funeral arrangements. A graveside service at Rosewood Memorial Park, 601 N. Witchduck Rd., will be conducted by Rev. Jeff Bell of Providence Presbyterian Church at 2:30 PM on Thursday, October 30, 2014. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Providence Presbyterian Church, 5497 Providence Rd., Virginia Beach, VA 23464.
