Funeral services for Cortez resident Evelyn Julia Lee will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, October 17 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery.

Visitation has been scheduled for Thursday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at Ertel Chapel.

Evelyn was born on August 25, 1926 in Shiprock, N.M. the daughter of Nelson and Julia Helen (Begay) Benally. She passed away on Monday, October 13, 2014 at Vista Grande Inn at the age of 88.

On February 15, 1945 in Rico, Colo. Evelyn married Jack Lee, Sr. For 20 years Evelyn worked in dictation for Vista Grande Inn. She will also be remembered as a great homemaker and cook. Evelyn was an active member of the Native American Church and involved in social song and dance. She was also a talented seamstress and enjoyed crocheting.

Surviving Evelyn are her children, David Lee and wife, Marita of Waterflow, N.M., Jackson Lee Sr. of Shiprock, N.M., Jack Lee Jr. and wife, Daisy of Mancos Creek, N.M., Emma Jean Begay and Richard Begay of Mancos Creek, N.M., Davis David Lee, Paul Lee and wife, Margaret of Dolores, and Vicki Jean Lee and Rodrick Jacket of Albuquerque, N.M. She leaves behind 20 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren; and sisters, Bertha Lee of Farmington, N.M., Faye Begay of Shiprock, N.M., and Emma Jean Upshaw of Kirtland, N.M. Preceding her in death are her parents, Nelson and Julia Helen (Begay) Benally; her husband, Jack Lee Sr.; son, Gerald Lee; brother, Hoskie Benally Sr.; and sister, Patty Francis.
