NORMA LEE BOYD

CHESAPEAKE – Norma Lee Boyd, 85, died Tuesday, August 19, 2014 in her home after a brief illness with her family at her side.
Mrs. Boyd was born in Virginia to the late Charles L. Blanchard and Cora Lee Blanchard. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Dennis J. Boyd, Jr. and a sister, Juanita Hancock.

She worked for the Suffolk Welfare Department from 1947 to 1953 and as a bookkeeper for Lipton Tea from October 1955 to April 1957.

Norma was a member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church for over 50 years. A lot of her ministry was behind the scenes and she had a loving heart for service to people and hospitality. Her passion was taking care of the flowers outside the church. This included purchasing, planting, weeding, mulching and maintaining the flower beds year-round. Some of the plants outside the church today originated from Norma's own yard.

During vacation bible school week you would find Norma in the kitchen coordinating and helping with the daily snacks. Norma also coordinated the volunteers who would host and provide snacks for the weekly coffee fellowship after the Sunday evening service. Once a month Eastiminster would host a senior citizens luncheon for which Norma did all the themed decorating and assembled a group of volunteers who worked on set-ups, to be food servers and provide kitchen cleanup. At Christmas time Norma and her family bought and wrapped individual gifts for each of the guests at the holiday luncheon.

Norma served as an administrator for Evangelism Explosion program and enjoyed her time with her Women's Bible Study Group who met each Tuesday and persistently prayed for people using her prayer journals.

She is survived by five children, Sharon L. Dunkelberger and husband Ron, Charles Dennis Boyd, Anne B. Matthews, Cathy B. Smith and husband Ramon, and Susan B. Caroon and husband James; six grandchildren, Chris, Dennis, David, John, Dennis James (DJ), and Rachel; and three great-grandchildren, Novell, Karley and Bentley.

A visitation will be held at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 929 S. Battlefield Boulevard, Chesapeake on Thursday, August 28, 2014 from 2:00pm to 4:00pm and 6:00pm to 8:00pm. A Life Celebration service will be held at the Eastminster Presbyterian Church, 3229 MacDonald Road, Virginia Beach 23464 on Friday, August 29, 2014 at 11am with Pastor David Zavadil and Pastor Robert Hobson officiating. Burial will follow in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Eastminster Presbyterian Church.

The family would like to thank Dr. Lisa Kennedy and Jessica for their many years of caregiving to Norma. They also thank the staff of Gentiva Hospice for their compassionate care and support. Special thanks to her Nurse Becky and aide Dawn.

Norma is greatly loved and will be missed by many.
