Richard Bowles was born on March 25, 1930 to Cara Daniel Bowles and William Bowles in Hopkinsville, Kentucky. He was the youngest of six children.

Richard attended school in Hopkinsville, Kentucky until he moved to Ohio in his late teens. It was at that time Richard began to enhance his skills as a musician.

In 1951 Richard was drafted into the United States Army. There he served two years as a musician in the Army Band. Upon completion of his service in 1953, he began on a journey to develop himself as an accomplished musician. He attended several universities in an effort to work with and learn from the best. Richard then traveled in an effort to find somewhere to call home.

In 1980 Richard moved to Newark, NJ and took a job as an accompanist with the Newark Public Schools at Eastside High School. It was there he stated on many occasions that he *found himself* in a place where he felt at his best. He also served as choir director for several churches throughout the State of New Jersey during that period; with the last one being St. Marks in Montclair, NJ.

Upon retiring in 2005, Richard moved in with his godson, Mark Hailstork and his family. There he was affectionately known as *Poppa Bowles* to Mark*s children. He lived out his final years with the vigor and resilience he was known for, as he battled congestive heart failure until the end. On August 4, 2014 God saw fit to bring His Angel Home. While he will be sorely missed by those who loved him, Richard now resides in a better place. In the Kingdom of Heaven.

Richard leaves to cherish his memory: his godson, Mark Hailstork; nephews, Anthony Bowles, John Jones and Alfred Bowles; niece, Patricia McWilliams; and a host of other relatives and friends.
