Esther "Laverne" Smalley was born on March 11, 1922 in Birch, the daughter of Oscar and Annie Korth Poehl and was raised in a Christian environment on the family farm along with 5 sisters and 2 brothers. Laverne was Baptized and Confirmed at the United Church of Christ in Birch, and attended schools in Birch and Birdsong. She married Franklin W. Larison in 1946 in Austin, and later, in 1982 she married Ralph Smalley. At that time she retired to the Birch Community where she resided until health issues required her move to St. Joseph's Manor. She previously lived in Austin, Corpus Christi and Brazoria and was a grocery store clerk and homemaker. She loved animals, her yard, flowers and music, especially Church Hymns. She also loved to cook and help others in need. She was known for her sweet personality and the wonderful sugar cookies she shared with others.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, sisters Leona Meier, Martha Peters, Malinda Brinkman, Betty Larison, Ruby Lee Meier and their husbands, and brothers, T. L. Poehl and Alton Poehl and their wives.

She is survived by her caregivers, nephew Darrell Poehl, niece Betty Tydlacka and her husband Glenn, and great-niece Brittney Knesek and husband Dustin, and several other nieces and nephews.

Memorial may be made to the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Lyons.
